U.S. trade policies threatening retaliation against protectionist nations were severely criticized by trading partners meeting in Geneva, but a U.S. official rejected the criticism. The Bush Administration was attacked for plans to go ahead with measures under Section 301 of the U.S. Trade Act in discussions of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. The European Community, Japan and other nations said U.S. policies jeopardize current trade liberalization efforts. But Rufus Yerxa, deputy U.S. trade representative, said Washington “would not apologize for actions taken in trying to pursue its objectives.”
