Ethnic unrest in Soviet Central Asia, in which more than 100 people in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan have died this month, has spread to the republic of Tadzhikistan, and two more people have died, a local newspaper reported. The June 13 edition of the region’s party daily Communist Tadzhikistana said the trouble was sparked by the arrival in the republic of Meskhetian Turks fleeing attacks in Uzbekistan. The paper said a group of “hooligans” from Uzbekistan arrived in the town of Asht, where refugee Turks have been given temporary shelter. The group began shooting at the military guards at the encampments, the newspaper said, and the guards returned the fire, killing two and wounding four.
