Storm Hits Texas, Louisiana; 2 Fliers Killed
A tropical depression thrashed in the Gulf of Mexico Sunday, drenching the Texas and Louisiana coasts with heavy rain, while thunderstorms pounding the plains were blamed in a small plane crash that killed two Yemeni pilots.
The storms in the nation’s midsection toppled trees, turned over cars and damaged a television station in Nebraska.
The depression, which formed Saturday in the Gulf of Mexico, was about 80 miles south of Matagorda, Tex., early Sunday evening, the National Weather Service said.
A tropical storm watch was in effect from Baffin Bay, Tex., to Morgan City, La.
The poorly defined depression had sustained winds of 35 m.p.h., just 4 m.p.h. shy of tropical storm strength.
In Ft. Worth, a single-engine aircraft crashed at Meacham Field, killing both men, with a Federal Aviation Administration official blaming the crash on a storm.
