P.M. BRIEFING : U.S. Files Multimillion-Dollar Water Pollution Suit Against Conn. Firm
Prosecutors filed a multimillion-dollar federal lawsuit today against Dexter Corp. of Windsor Locks, charging violations of the Clean Water Act in what is said to be the largest case of its kind in New England.
U.S. Atty. Stanley A. Twardy Jr. said the paper company is charged with violating virtually every aspect of the Clean Water Act since July, 1987, including illegally discharging waste water and hazardous chemicals into the Connecticut River and Kettle Brook. Dexter faces fines of $10,000 to $25,000 for each day it has been in violation.
Twardy said he could not specify the total fines faced by the company. “It’s certainly in the millions of dollars,” he said.
