College Roundup : No. 2 Irvine Wins Three Water Polo Matches at Air Force

UC Irvine’s water polo team, ranked second in the nation, ran its record to 8-1 by winning its three matches Saturday at the Air Force Academy tournament in Colorado Springs.

The Anteaters opened play in the round-robin tournament with a 15-12 victory over Pepperdine. Seniors Tom Warde and Julian Harvey scored five and four goals respectively to pace UC Irvine.

Warde added six goals and freshman Pablo Yrizar contributed four in a 14-9 victory over the Air Force in the team’s second match.

In the nightcap, Yrizar’s six goals led UC Irvine to an 18-7 rout of Army.

In women’s cross-country:

The UC Irvine’s women’s cross-country team won the Aztec Invitational and the men’s squad finished fourth Saturday at Morley Field in San Diego.

It was the second consecutive meet victory for the women, who won the 15-team competition with 66 points.

Senior Brigid Stirling led the team by winning the 5,000-meter event in 17:13.3.

In the men’s competition, UC Irvine finished behind Arizona (65 points), New Mexico (131) and USC (175).
