NATION IN BRIEF : THE DAKOTAS : States Celebrate 100th Anniversary
The friendly rivalry over who was first continued as North and South Dakota celebrated the 100th anniversary of their admission to the Union. North Dakota Gov. George Sinner kidded his South Dakota counterpart, Gov. George S. Mickelson, after Mickelson arrived a few minutes late for a morning radio show in Bismarck, N.D. “I thought it was appropriate that you got in a minute or two late,” Sinner said. “We did some research, and it turns out that North Dakota was actually the first. . . . “ Officials said that not even President Benjamin Harrison, who signed the Nov. 2 proclamation, knew which one came first, even though North Dakota was admitted as the 39th state and South Dakota as the 40th.
