Fergie’s Deep in the Heart of Texas
The Duchess of York traveled to Houston on Thursday for a five-day visit that will include trips to two hospitals, two operas, two schools, a ranch and the Johnson Space Center.
The duchess, the former Sarah Ferguson who is known informally as Fergie, was invited to Houston about nine months ago by the Houston Grand Opera to take part in their celebration of 300 years of British opera.
“She’s doing quite a steady, full program of engagements for a combination of reasons,” Francis Cornish of the British Embassy said Thursday. “It’s a combination of areas she is interested in.”
The duchess will be the guest of socialite Lynn Wyatt and her husband, Oscar, chairman of the Coastal Corp. She will stay at the couple’s River Oaks mansion and their South Texas ranch between excursions around Houston.
The duchess was to be welcomed at City Hall today by Mayor Kathy Whitmire and then travel to the Johnson Space Center for a tour of mission control and mock-ups of the space station and space shuttle.
