A San Diego teen-ager who was sitting on the San Diego Trolley tracks was struck by a trolley and critically injured Tuesday night, police said.

Daniel Meadows, 18, was hit by the train at 10:09 p.m., a Fire Department spokesman said.

“He went under the front part of the train,” said Peter Tereschuck, vice president of transportation for the San Diego Trolley. “As the driver was rounding the curve, he saw the guy sitting on the tracks. He sounded the train’s horn and applied the emergency brake. But all of that wasn’t sufficient to stop the light rail.” The car came within inches of crushing Meadows, spokesman Jon MacDonald said.

Tereschuck would not release the operator’s name. The accident occurred at the corner of 32nd and Commercial streets.

Meadows, who was pinned under the westbound train heading for the Santa Fe depot, was freed by firefighters after 20 minutes. He suffered severe head injuries and was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center, where a spokesman said he was in critical condition.

Tereschuck said passengers were transferred to another train. The Metropolitan Transit Development Board is investigating.
