P.M. BRIEFING : Spill Costs Ashland $4.6 Million
Ashland Oil Inc. will pay Pennsylvania $4.6 million in civil penalties and other costs for damage caused by a 1988 spill of more than 700,000 gallons of diesel fuel near Pittsburgh, Gov. Robert P. Casey said today.
The money will finance a number of initiatives, including an environmental survey of the Ohio River basin and scholarships for the study of environmental protection.
The fuel flowed into the Monongahela and Ohio rivers when a storage tank ruptured at the company’s facility in Jefferson, south of Pittsburgh.
The spill killed thousands of fish and birds, and forced public water systems in three states to stop drawing from the rivers.
