NATION : Bitter Cold Shatters Records; Snow Expected in North Florida

An Arctic cold wave shattered records in dozens of cities all over again today, icing parts of Texas with snow. Forecasters warned northern Florida to brace for a snowstorm.

The bottom dropped out of the thermometer in Nebraska overnight when the mercury sank to 41 below zero at Scotts Bluff and Alliance.

Cold weather records fell like snowflakes from the Rockies to the East Coast.

They included 25 below at Goodland and Concordia, Kan.; 21 below in Topeka, Kan.; 23 below at Kansas City, Mo.; 28 below in Cheyenne, Wyo.; 15 below at Wichita, Kan.; 4 below at Tulsa; 23 below at Indianapolis; 20 below at Dayton and Cincinnati, Ohio, and 1 below at Binghamton, N.Y.

The onrush of cold threw sleet, freezing and an inch of snow on Houston.
