NATION IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Dissident Priest Is Excommunicated

The Archdiocese of Washington said it was excommunicating Father George A. Stallings Jr. and any of his followers active in the Imani Temple, an African-American breakaway from the Roman Catholic Church. The announcement was made by Vicar General William Kane in consultation with Cardinal James A. Hickey, according to a Hickey spokeswoman. The action had been expected since Stallings announced last week that his church, which he started last summer, was breaking all ties to Rome.
