PRIMEVAL SURFERS: Columnist Robert Jones laments that California is forfeiting some of its surfing heritage (A3), but members of the San Onofre Surf Club are doing their best to keep it alive. . . . Now in their 60s and 70s but still riding waves they’ve been surfing since the 1930s, club members are featured in the current Life magazine. . . . One member, Orange Coast College professor Tom (Opai) Wert, 66, above, said such publicity might once have attracted annoying crowds to the beach. “But all that happened when they started the Gidget movies,” he said. “Nothing after that makes much difference.”
