a benefit basketball game between members of the Chargers and the Say No to Drugs team, consisting of top former and current pro athletes in San Diego, will be held at Mar Vista High School in Imperial Beach Saturday night at 7:30.

Charger players expected to be on hand include Billy Ray Smith, Gary Plummer, Tim Spencer, Billy Joe Tolliver, Burt Grossman, plus Charlie Joiner, former star wide receiver and now an assistant coach.

Admission will be $4 for adults, $3 for children 12 and younger and free for children younger than 5. All proceeds go to the school.

Organizers will announce the formation of the Global Hockey League at a Los Angeles news conference today, and a newspaper said San Diego may be granted a franchise.

The Saskatoon (Canada) Star-Phoenix reported in its editions today that either Los Angeles or San Diego will be granted a franchise, with a representative of Forum Owner Jerry Buss being “one interested party.”

The paper said that franchises will also be based in Denver, New England and Hamilton, Canada. Albany, N.Y., is the league’s only announced franchise.
