NATION : Black Students End Selma Sit-In
Black students abandoned their sit-in at Selma High School today, but they took their protest to City Hall with a call for Mayor Joe Smitherman’s resignation.
The students, who had staged a sit-in at the school cafeteria since Thursday, left the building at the request of black School Supt. Norward Roussell, whose firing by the white-controlled school board sparked the demonstration. Roussell was reinstated last week but has not been given a contract extension.
After leaving the cafeteria, the students marched to City Hall, where about a dozen or more protesters have staged their own sit-in for the past five days.
The decision to leave the school came as protesters and city officials awaited a ruling on the city’s request for an injunction ordering an end to the protests.
