Howie Spira, a self-described gambler, was arrested after a federal grand jury in Tampa, Fla., indicted him for allegedly trying to extort money from New York Yankee owner George Steinbrenner.

Spira, 30, was taken into custody without incident at his apartment in the Bronx, according to an FBI spokesman.

Spira, who worked for a foundation operated by Yankee outfielder Dave Winfield and has had feuds with both Winfield and Steinbrenner, was accused of taping telephone conversations he had with Steinbrenner and threatening to expose agreements he allegedly had with the Yankee owner.
