Israelis Wound Six Arabs Who Broke Curfew
Israeli troops shot and wounded six Palestinians in the Jabaliya refugee camp in the occupied Gaza Strip when residents broke an army curfew to attend Muslim morning prayers, hospital sources said Friday.
A seventh Arab was injured by a percussion grenade in Jabaliya, they said.
The shootings, during clashes with troops, followed one of the bloodiest days of the last four months in a 28-month-old Palestinian uprising against Israeli rule. On Thursday, the army killed four Arabs and wounded at least 130 in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. Three of those killed were Jabaliya residents.
Hospital officials said troops also shot and wounded four Palestinians in Gaza City during sporadic clashes Friday, the second day of Eid al Fitr, the festival that ends of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
However, an Israeli army spokesman said security forces had no reports of injuries in Gaza.
Also on Friday, in Tunis, Tunisia, it was disclosed that Yasser Arafat, leader of the Palestine Liberation Organization, sent a message to President Bush regarding Thursday’s clashes in the territories.
A PLO representative in Tunis gave the message to U.S. Ambassador Robert H. Pelletreau Jr., the PLO news agency WAFA said. The contents were not disclosed.
