Max Reynolds; Former Mayor and City Councilman in Orange

Former Orange Mayor Max J. Reynolds has died of heart failure at St. Joseph Hospital. He was 74.

Reynolds, who died Wednesday, served as mayor of Orange from 1962 to 1964 and was on the City Council from 1958 to 1966.

“Max made a very significant contribution to the city during a time of expansion and development,” Mayor Don E. Smith said. “He always has been willing to assist his services to the community. He left his mark in Orange.”

Reynolds’ daughter, Kathy Wait of Palo Alto, recalled that “every time a visitor came to town, he would drive them around the plaza. He loved Orange. It was his prize. He called it ‘God’s Country.’ ”

Reynolds was born in Markle, Ind., in 1916, and moved to Orange with his family in 1949.

Reynolds founded the Armstrong Roofing Co. in Orange. He also served as president of the Orange County League of Cities in the 1960s and was a founding director of the Bank of Yorba Linda.

In addition to his daughter, Reynolds is survived by his wife, Elaine; sons William, Timothy and Michael, and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for May 11 at First United Methodist Church in Orange. Burial will be private.
