Curtain Falls on ‘Aida’: A U.S. tour of Verdi’s “Aida” that would have included a five-story Sphinx and about 1,200 performers has been canceled. “The costs were getting too high and the producers felt income would not cover expenses,” said Tony Attanasio of the International Opera Festival. The tour was scheduled to begin June 1 at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Two scheduled shows also in June at the Los Angeles Coliseum were previously canceled after only 6,000 tickets were sold. The show was first performed in Giza, Egypt, in 1987 and earned mixed reviews. Since then, the production has been staged around the world and organizers say it has been seen by about 850,000 people. Attanasio said the festival was planning to resume the show in Europe next summer.
