THE SIDELINES : Celtics to Approach Krzyzewski

The Boston Celtics reportedly will talk with Duke University Coach Mike Krzyzewski about coaching the National Basketball Assn. team next season.

Krzyzewski will meet next week with Dave Gavitt, the Celtics newly appointed chief operating officer, The Boston Globe today said it was told by unidentified sources.

The Boston Herald today said Krzyzewski, a friend of Gavitt, has said he would be interested in the job if the Celtics approached him.

The two already have had contact, Duke Athletic Director Tom Butters told the Globe.

When asked about Krzyzewski, Gavitt said it is not fair to comment on individual candidates.

The Celtics fired head Coach Jimmy Rodgers right after the team was eliminated from the playoffs by the New York Knicks.

Boston assistant Coach Chris Ford has been mentioned as a candidate for the head coaching job.
