The Supreme Court refused today to limit the power of a federal judge’s appointees to supervise elections and other activities of the Teamsters union.

The justices rejected arguments that lower courts were unlawfully enforcing orders aimed at ridding the union of corruption and ties to organized crime.

The case stems from the federal government’s 1988 lawsuit accusing the Teamsters of violating the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act.
