A San Diego cabdriver is in serious condition after being robbed and shot shortly after midnight Sunday.
Merrill Burghardt, a 38-year-old Coast Cab driver, was robbed and shot in the neck and chest in the 1200 block of S. 37th St. He underwent surgery at UCSD Medical Center, said police spokesman Bill Robinson.
“Preliminary indications were that the bullet may have impacted his spinal cord,” Robinson said. San Diego robbery detectives are investigating.
“Next to pizza delivery persons, cabdrivers are subject to more robberies than anyone else in vehicles,” said Robinson. There were 90 robberies of cab drivers last year, including 39 through July 1, and there have been 19 so far this year, he said.
