Low-Income Housing Project Gains

The state has approved $1.7 million in loans for construction of an 80-unit affordable housing project in Avalon, which is to supply apartments for workers in the city’s tourist industry.

Under the terms of the state Department of Housing and Community Development loan approved last month, 38 of the units will be reserved for low-income families, said Chuck Prince, Avalon’s city manager.

Of the 38 units, about half will be reserved for low-income families and another half for very low-income families. To qualify for the low-income units, a family of four can earn no more than $31,000 a year. The corresponding figure for a very low-income family is $20,850. The remaining 52 units of the complex will be rented at market prices.

The complex will be developed by Dan Logue Development and Construction on three acres of land leased to the city at no cost by the Santa Catalina Island Co., city and company officials said.

The city will sublease the property on Eucalyptus Hill to the developer. Groundbreaking is set for late this year, with occupancy in the fall of 1991.
