NATION : IRS Was Pursuing Mitch Snyder
The Internal Revenue Service was demanding $90,251 from homeless advocate Mitch Snyder at the time of his suicide last week, his longtime companion said today.
Snyder received a June 17 preliminary notice from the IRS in which the government sought about $50,000 in back taxes from Snyder, plus $40,000 in penalties to cover $150,000 he received in 1985 and 1986 from the producers of the television movie “Samaritan,” who purchased the rights to his life story, Carol Fennelly said.
“We had just gotten the bill,” Fennelly said. “They have been investigating us for two years and we had been waiting for a decision.”
Fennelly said Snyder had planned to turn the demand into a public issue and complain about national priorities.
