A man shot to death in Newport Beach after leading police on a lengthy chase has been identified as Cameron C. Rogers, 27, of San Dimas.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s Sgt. Pete Solis said Rogers had a police record dating from 1982, including a rape conviction. In 1989, he was convicted of possession of controlled substances and knowingly receiving stolen property, Solis said.

Solis said the police record indicates that Rogers was on probation at the time of his death.

Rogers allegedly stole a Chevrolet Blazer in Huntington Beach about 4 a.m. Wednesday. Fountain Valley police spotted the fleeing vehicle, and they began a chase through Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach.

Rogers drove to Newport Beach, and the Blazer became wedged between a wall and a parked car on a narrow street on the Balboa Peninsula. Police opened fire when it appeared that Rogers was attempting the turn the vehicle in the direction of officers to run them down, authorities said.

The Blazer has been impounded by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department for forensic examination, said Fountain Valley Police Detective Sgt. Darryl Nance.

The incident is under investigation by the Orange County district attorney’s office, which routinely probes such officer-involved shootings.
