WORLD IN BRIEF : EAST GERMANY : West’s Ultra-Right Party Is Registered
West Germany’s right-wing Republican Party has been registered as a legitimate political organization in the East, authorities in East Berlin said. Several political and anti-fascist groups had objected to accepting the party founded in the early 1980s by a former member of Adolf Hitler’s elite Waffen SS troops. The party first won seats in West Berlin city elections in January, 1989, after campaigning on an anti-immigration platform. The East German Committee of Anti-Fascist Resistance Fighters had opposed recognition.
