Death of 6-Month-Old Girl Now Listed as Homicide
The death of a 6-month-old girl whose stepfather said she died after falling off a couch and lapsing into a coma has been listed a homicide by the coroner’s office, officials said Tuesday.
The girl, Destini Coronado, died of blunt trauma injuries to her head, coroner’s spokesman Bob Dambacher said. No charges have been filed in the incident, which is still under investigation, sheriff’s investigators said.
Sheriff’s deputies were summoned to the baby’s home in the 13900 block of Coteau Drive in unincorporated Los Angeles County on Aug. 7 after receiving a call that a baby had stopped breathing, Sgt. Bob Stoneman said.
Destini’s stepfather, Conrad Garcia, told deputies that he was watching the girl while her mother, Ruth Garcia, 23, was at work. Garcia said the baby fell off the couch, Stoneman said.
The infant remained in a coma at UCLA Medical Center until she died Aug. 8, Stoneman said.
