Soviet Official to Speak at Claremont College
Vladimir F. Petrovsky, the Soviet deputy foreign minister, will present the inaugural lecture of the Rita E. Hauser Lectures on Foreign Affairs tonight in Claremont.
Petrovsky’s responsibilities as deputy to Foreign Minister Eduard A. Shevardnadze include the Middle East, international organizations, multilateral disarmament issues, nuclear energy use and human rights.
The lecture series is a joint venture of the Claremont Graduate School and the Council on Foreign Relations, made possible in part by a gift from Hauser, a New York attorney and former U.S. delegate to the United Nations.
Petrovsky earned a doctorate in historical sciences from Moscow Institute of International Relations in 1957, then joined the Soviet delegation to the United Nations. In 1961, he received his first appointment to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was appointed to his current position in 1986.
The lecture will be at 8 p.m. at Bridges Hall of Music, 150 E. 4th St. It is free and open to the public.
