A man suspected of robbing a credit union office Wednesday morning in Long Beach apparently shot and killed himself after fleeing to a home in Lakewood, sheriff’s deputies said.

Long Beach police and sheriff’s deputies heard a gunshot while conducting a yard-to-yard search for suspects in the robbery of the U.S. Postal Credit Union.

Police saw the body of a man in the doorway of a wooden shack in the 6300 block of Edgefield Street but did not approach it because they believed an armed suspect still was inside.

A SWAT team stormed the shack about three hours later, but found no one there, Deputy George DuCoulombier said. Area residents were evacuated, and students at two nearby schools were told to stay inside, police said.

At one point authorities thought the man, whose name was not released, had been shot by an accomplice, but they later determined that only one person was involved.
