PRO FOOTBALL REPORT / WEEKDAY UPDATE : RAMS : Seifert Defends His Former Boss

Share

George Seifert, coach of the San Francisco 49ers who was an assistant to Ram Coach John Robinson at the University of Oregon, can’t believe that there has been speculation about Robinson’s job security.

“I think that’s ridiculous,” Seifert said. “He’s one of the great coaches. I’ve known Robby for a long time, and I can’t imagine that’s even being talked about. Things happen some times. I look at the Rams and see outstanding players and a well-coached team. I don’t have any answers for their problems, but he’s certainly proved over the years that he’s a great football coach.”

The 49er offense gets most of the attention, but Robinson says their defense is the primary reason for their perfect record. The offense is rated No. 1 in the league. The defense ranks seventh (first against the rush and 18th against the pass). “They have the best, or maybe the second-best, defense in football,” Robinson said. . . . The 49ers’ magic number is one. Any San Francisco victory or New Orleans Saint loss will give the 49ers the NFC West title. . . . The Rams, who usually hold a light workout on Thanksgiving, ran through a spirited, 2 1/2-hour practice Thursday.
