Bush Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize
A Norwegian legislator said Friday he has nominated President Bush for the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize for standing up to Saddam Hussein’s “threats against the whole world community.”
Vidar Kleppe of the right-wing Party of Progress said Bush, by leading allied forces against Iraq, “stepped into the front line in the fight against oppression, torture and totalitarian acts against human dignity.”
As an elected member of a National Assembly, Kleppe has the right to nominate a Peace Prize candidate.
The deadline for prize nominations was Thursday. Awards committee secretary Geir Lundestad said nominations postmarked by then will be accepted even if they arrive late.
Norwegian news reports said other candidates include Lithuanian President Vytautas Landsbergis, South African black activist Nelson Mandela and Czechoslovak President Vaclav Havel.
Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev won the 1990 prize.
