FLICKS FILM AND VIDEO FILE : Apollo Shots : A film condensing nine manned flights into a single representative trip to the moon will be shown Sunday in Ojai.

In 1979 a free-lance writer by the name of Al Reinert decided to go into the independent filmmaking business. Ten years later his first production, “For All Mankind,” was nominated for an Academy Award for best documentary.

“For All Mankind” is Reinert’s look at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s moon exploration program. It will be shown Sunday by the Ojai Film Society at the Ojai Playhouse.

Reinert began with about 2,000 hours of space agency footage from the nine manned Apollo flights, which he whittled down and edited together for the film. The result is a single representative Apollo flight to the moon. The film also includes interviews with some of the astronauts involved in the moon flights.

Show time is set for 4:30 p.m.

The popularity of most videos over the past week paled greatly in comparison with that of Academy Award best-picture nominee “Ghost,” which is new on store shelves. Here are the five most rented videos in a sampling of shops in Ventura County:

At Video Tyme in Ventura: “Ghost,” “The Two Jakes,” “Flatliners,” “Arachnophobia” and “Problem Child.” “ ‘Ghost’ is easily the most requested one,” said Steve Mayby, the store’s general manager.

At Varsity Video in Moorpark: “Ghost,” “Pacific Heights,” “Narrow Margin,” “Pump Up the Volumne” and “Arachnophobia.”

And at Viddy-O Wizard in Simi Valley: “Ghost,” (what else?) “Pacific Heights,” “Arachnophobia,” “Problem Child” and “Pump up the Volume.”

The Thousand Oaks Library’s extensive collection has become more extensive with the additions of three episodes of the Agatha Christie “Partners in Crime” series, which originally was broadcast on Public Broadcasting stations.

For those who prefer scenic beauty to murder mysteries, the library has also added a nonfiction film titled, “Grand Canyon: Petrified Forest and Painted Desert.”
