New Sugar Substitute: Monsanto Co. said its NutraSweet Co. subsidiary is developing a cheaper sugar substitute that has 10,000 times the sweetness of sugar but no calories. Sweetener 2000, which costs less than 1 cent per pound to produce, can be used in baking. NutraSweet’s current sweetener, aspartame--marketed as NutraSweet--is about 200 times sweeter than sugar.
