BEIJING : Ribbon Cutting in China

Share

Former President Jimmy Carter will be here for a ribbon-cutting ceremony Sunday at the Beijing Artificial Limbs Factory, which was designed to double China’s production of artificial limbs.

“There are 7.55 million people in China who have lost limbs, and 450,000 are in need of artificial limbs,” factory director Zhang Xiaoqin recently told the official China Daily. The factory will turn out 30,000 limbs each year.

Carter is chairman of the Global 2000 Development Foundation, which along with a British bank donated $1.5 million for the factory’s construction.

An accord to build the artificial limb factory, and other assistance to disabled people in China, was signed by Carter during a 1987 visit to Beijing.
