Alaska Reopens Road in Fire Area
A week-old wildfire on Kenai Peninsula continued burning out of control Monday, but a major highway from the popular vacation spot to Anchorage was reopened after being closed for a day.
About 8,000 acres of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge had been scorched by midday Monday, said officials at the Interagency Fire Information Center here.
Flames breached the Kenai River on Sunday and state troopers closed the heavily traveled Sterling Highway, which links Kenai with Anchorage, about 60 miles to the north.
Thousands of Memorial Day weekend campers began returning to Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city, as the road was reopened.
