Santa Monica : Update on Hate Letter

Share

Santa Monica police will hold a community forum tonight to discuss their investigation into a hate letter mailed in May to families of Santa Monica High School students with Latino surnames.

The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Edison Elementary School cafeteria, 2425 Kansas Ave.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation is continuing, according to Detective Alex Padilla, who is handling the case.

The meeting was called in response to complaints from members of the Latino community, who expressed frustration that the person or people who wrote and sent the letter have not been caught, Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Supt. Eugene Tucker said. Topics such as improving race relations may also be discussed.

The rambling letter, filled with racist remarks against Latinos, was mailed to about 700 families, and used the school district’s return address and bulk mail number.
