A former Los Angeles school teacher who hid out in a Ventura River homeless encampment to escape prosecution was sentenced Monday to 14 years in jail for molesting four of his female students, authorities said.

Don Ray Moore, 57, was charged with 21 counts of felony molestation of several of his sixth-grade students at the 97th Street School in South-Central Los Angeles between 1981 and 1984. He pleaded guilty May 6 to six of those counts and of committing a lewd act with a child under 14 while in a position of trust.

Moore faced a maximum 18-year sentence, said Los Angeles Deputy Dist. Atty. Ryan Rainey. Under the sentence imposed by Superior Court Commissioner Barry A. Taylor, Moore could be eligible for parole in seven years.
