2 Remain Hospitalized After Church Van, Pickup Collide
At least two people remained hospitalized late Sunday after an accident Saturday in which a church van and a pickup truck collided head-on.
The accident happened at 6:45 p.m. on Highway 94, 1 1/2 miles west of the sparsely populated Cameron Corners area, and about 2 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border.
In all, 13 people were injured--ranging in age from 12 to 77--and taken to five area hospitals for treatment, authorities said. Most, however, were treated and released.
On Sunday, Luther Grass remained in good condition at UC San Diego Medical Center, suffering from chest contusions, a nursing supervisor said. His wife, Louise Grass, was in good condition at Grossmont Hospital and was expected to be released today, officials said.
Most of the injured were returning in the van from an outing sponsored by a Brawley church, officials said.
The driver of the pickup truck was Joseph Butler, 32, of Potrero, the California Highway Patrol said.
According to the CHP, Butler lost control of his pickup and crossed the double yellow line, crashing head-on into the church van.
