Glendale resident Jacqueline Powers Doud has been named academic vice president and dean of the faculty at Mt. St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles. Doud said she was attracted to the women’s college run by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet because of its “commitment to multicultural education and the development of women leaders.” She had previously served as vice president of academic affairs and dean of the faculty at Woodbury University in Burbank since 1984.

Occidental College biology professor Laura M. Hoopes has been elected president of the Council on Undergraduate Research at the organization’s annual meeting in Richmond, Va. The council was formed in 1978 by chemistry faculty at private liberal arts colleges to provide undergraduate students and faculty research opportunities in science. Hoopes, on the Occidental faculty since 1973, has been conducting research into aging.

Alyce Russell of Glendale has been installed as president of the 160-member Women’s Council of Verdugo Hills Hospital and Foundation. The council provides equipment and program funding for the hospital and operates “Kids on the Block,” a puppet program for handicapped children. Russell is also a volunteer puppeteer.
