Raisa Gorbachev ‘Not Well,’ Aide Says : Family: A spokesman declines to confirm rumors that she suffered a heart attack.

Raisa Gorbachev, distressed by last week’s attempted coup against her husband, is ill, a spokesman for President Mikhail S. Gorbachev said Saturday.

“I can say that she is not very well,” Karen Karagezyan said by telephone from his Kremlin office. He declined to elaborate.

Karagezyan was responding to a question about rumors in the Soviet capital that Raisa Gorbachev, who is 59, had been hospitalized with a heart attack after the coup collapsed.

Soviet reporters who flew to Moscow with the Gorbachevs from the Crimea after Gorbachev regained power Wednesday said his wife could not move her left hand, according to a report from a radio station set up by the Russian Parliament during the coup.

At a news conference Thursday, Gorbachev said his wife was very upset at the attempt to overthrow him, which happened while they were vacationing at their Black Sea holiday home.

“Raisa Maximovna took it very hard. She felt very badly about it. She’s not feeling well at all, but we think this will pass,” Gorbachev said.

“We were sort of locked up in the house, and it was all very difficult,” Gorbachev said of the three days of house arrest in the Crimea before he was restored to power.

The Gorbachevs were on vacation with their daughter Irina, son-in-law Anatoly and granddaughter Anastasia.
