Nation IN BRIEF : ALABAMA : Governor Pays State After Ethics Uproar
Alabama Gov. Guy Hunt wrote the state a $1,750 personal check after ethics questions were raised about his use of a state airplane to preach at churches in Tifton, Ga., and Danville, Va., where he accepted cash offerings. Aides said the payment was the amount Hunt received in offerings from Primitive Baptist church members at two engagements earlier this year.
Records showed the taxpayer cost of the governor’s air travel to Tifton was $2,540. The Danville trip cost the state $3,243. His office’s use of state aircraft this year through July cost the state $184,000, records showed. Hunt’s use of state planes for personal trips was questioned at a time when he had ordered a curtailment of state government travel.
