Block Standing Firm on Demand for Apology
Pasadena officials met for 40 minutes with Los Angeles County Sheriff Sherman Block on Thursday, but could not persuade him to withdraw his demand for an apology for remarks by city councilmen about “white supremacists” and “neo-Nazis” in the Sheriff’s Department, officials said.
Block had said on Wednesday that no sheriff’s deputies will work at the Rose Parade and the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day unless he receives an apology. Members of the council had said they felt no need to apologize because their remarks referred to a finding by a federal judge that a group of white supremacists operated in the Lynwood sheriff’s station.
Pasadena Mayor Jess Hughston, City Manager Philip Hawkey and Police Chief Jerry Oliver would not comment after the meeting. A spokesman for the city said discussions will continue.
