Milke-Flores Leaning Toward Congressional Bid

Los Angeles Councilwoman Joan Milke-Flores said Thursday that she is leaning toward a race for Congress next year in a newly created coastline district that will run from San Pedro to Venice.

“I can’t foresee anything that would persuade me not to run,” the Harbor-area councilwoman said after a luncheon in San Pedro where she announced her interest in seeking the Republican nomination for the congressional seat.

Last year, the three-term councilwoman unsuccessfully ran for secretary of state against Democratic incumbent March Fong Eu. The campaign marked Flores’ first bid for office other than the council seat she has held since 1981.

A longtime San Pedro resident, Milke-Flores has long been active in GOP circles and said that her interest in the congressional seat was based largely on the large number of Republican voters it will include in cities such as Torrance. “It just seems like a good district for me,” Milke-Flores said. A final decision on her candidacy, she said, will come by the middle of next week.
