Duarte : More Lighting Sought
The chamber of commerce has asked the City Council for help in improving the lighting in the Duarte Shopping Center, where a drop in nighttime business has caused some store owners to begin closing their shops early.
The council Tuesday asked the city attorney to investigate whether funds for installation of lights could be recovered from the six property owners in the center. It will reconsider the request in January.
The chamber has asked that the city add six light poles to the six already installed as part of a $455,000 redevelopment of the center that started in 1984.
Funds for the project, of which 15% were contributed by the property owners, ran out before the six light standards, estimated to cost between $40,000 and $60,000, could be installed in the middle of the parking lot, said Ed Cox, director of community development.
The Duarte Shopping Center is on the southeast corner of Huntington Drive and Buena Vista Street. A grocery store, a fast food restaurant, a liquor store and several other shops occupy the space.
