MAKING IT WORK : Don’t Give Up on Help

Share

Relatives and friends of those who are suffering from depression may become frustrated and even angry because their efforts to help seem fruitless.

Remember that depression is a “very treatable illness,” and don’t give up, advises psychiatrist Himasiri De Silva, who founded the Depressive and Manic-Depressive Assn. of Orange County.

He suggests that, while the patient is getting medical attention, loved ones:

* Provide companionship and suggest activities to keep the depressed person involved in life, but avoid making demands.

* Never negate or challenge a suicide threat. Try to explain that suicidal thoughts are a symptom of depression, which can be treated. And seek professional help.

* Encourage exercise, but remember that the uplifting effect of physical activity doesn’t last.

* Make sure the patient avoids alcohol and drugs, which only worsen depression.

* Recommend involvement in a support group.
