Gas Explosion
Your article “One Killed, 18 Injured in Texas Gas Explosion” (April 8) made a major omission: It did not name the gas involved in this tragic explosion.
Every wire story we read indicated clearly that officials from both the state and the pipeline company had identified the gas as propane, or “liquefied propane.” Propane, unlike natural gas, is heavier than air: Gas escaping from a leak in the pipeline would tend to stay near the ground, not dissipate in the air as would natural gas.
Because of the important safety differences between these gases, we feel it is important to make the distinction.
