Santa Anas to Turn Up the Heat This Weekend
Unseasonably strong Santa Ana winds will gust over Orange County today and Sunday, possibly pushing temperatures into the high 80s, meteorologists said Friday.
Building high pressure over the Southland coupled with a jet stream pushing south from Northern California will create Santa Ana wind conditions, said Steve Burback, a meteorologist with WeatherData Inc., which provides forecasts for The Times.
This weekend’s winds will be the strongest this year and are “a little abnormal for this late,” Burback said.
Burback said temperatures in Orange County today are expected to be in the mid-70s to high 80s, with northerly winds gusting up to 30 m.p.h., Burback said.
Sunday’s winds are expected to be just as strong, with highs again in the 80s.
“This will go a good 36 hours for sure before it weakens,” Burback said.
By Monday, skies are expected to be clear and calmer.
The winds today and Sunday are expected to be “quite strong for the latter part of April. Usually by late spring things calm down.” Santa Ana winds occur at all times of the year, but are most common during the fall.
