VENTURA : Schools Approve $2.4 Million in Cuts
The Ventura Unified School District Board of Education on Tuesday approved $2.4 million in cuts to balance its $57.3-million budget for the new school year.
To balance the budget, officials voted to increase the average class size in the elementary schools from 30 to 33 students by eliminating 16 teaching positions through attrition and retirement. Twenty-one non-teaching positions will also be eliminated.
The board also voted to eliminate transition classes, designed to help those students who have finished kindergarten but are not ready to enter the first grade.
Parents with children expecting to enroll in the special classes next fall had urged the board to save the program.
