LANCASTER : Supervisors OK Landfill Expansion
Expansion of the Lancaster Landfill, which will allow its owners to double the height of its garbage pile, was unanimously approved Tuesday by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
State water board officials had approved the expansion in February, even though some toxic pollutants had seeped from the unlined landfill into ground water. At that time, officials with the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board said adding more garbage would not add to the pollution, which owner Waste Management of California Inc. has been ordered to clean up.
The 100-acre landfill is the main dump for Lancaster and surrounding areas. The expansion will allow space for another 857,000 tons of garbage above the 1.4 million-ton capacity.
