Prime to Close Hardware Unit: Prime Computer Inc., which previously said that it would sell its computer hardware division to a group of its executives, now says it will shut down the division. The computer hardware unit accounted for $150 million of Prime’s $1.3 billion in revenue last year. It employs more than 400. The Boston Globe reported that plans to spin off the division to its managers were scuttled when the company decided that it could not develop a next-generation computer system as quickly as had been planned. Prime, which is changing its name to Computervision, had planned to lend $25 million to the management team to help them buy 80% of the division. Prime, based in Bedford, Mass., also was to have provided up to $20 million in credit.
