Azusa : Levies for Fire Services
The City Council voted 3 to 2 to reinstate the Community Maintenance and Fire Safety Assessment Districts and imposed a 5% utility user tax to meet the increasing costs of paying the county for fire protection services.
Fire protection fees, about $2.5 million a year, have been paid for with property tax funds. But that assessment will not meet the $2.8-million bill expected in 1993, officials say.
When the assessment districts, which were suspended in 1990, are reinstated in July, 1993, it will cost the average household $6.20 per month. The fee will be included in the city-mailed electricity-water bill, which will also reflect the 5% user surcharge of $2.50 per month for the average customer. A similar levy on Southern California Gas Co. bills will average about 56 cents monthly.
Residents over age 62 and low-income households are exempt.
